The SAT has officially transitioned to a shorter, two-hour adaptive digital format administered via the College Board's Bluebook app. This new structure features built-in tools like the Desmos calculator and dynamically adjusts the difficulty of the second module based on a student's performance in the first.

Understanding the Adaptive Format

The most significant change to the Digital SAT is its multistage adaptive design. Both the Reading/Writing and Math sections are split into two modules. How you perform on the first module directly dictates the difficulty of the questions you will face in the second module. If you perform well initially, you are routed to a harder second module, which unlocks the highest possible score brackets.

The Bluebook Testing Experience

The digital interface is designed to be student-friendly. It includes a built-in timer, an annotation tool for highlighting text, a mark-for-review feature to flag difficult questions, and a reference sheet for math formulas. Because the test is digital, students no longer have to worry about bubbling in Scantron sheets, reducing the risk of administrative errors.

Is the Digital SAT easier than the old paper SAT?

The Digital SAT is shorter and allows more time per question, which many students find less exhausting, but the actual content and scoring remain just as rigorous.

Can I bring my own calculator to the Digital SAT?

Yes, you can bring an approved physical calculator, but the testing app also features a built-in Desmos graphing calculator for the entire math section.

What happens if my laptop loses power during the Digital SAT?

The Bluebook app saves your progress continuously. If your battery dies or the Wi-Fi drops, you can plug in or reconnect and pick up exactly where you left off without losing testing time.

Immediate Actions

  • Download the College Board Bluebook app to your testing device to familiarize yourself with the interface.
  • Take a full-length digital practice test to establish a baseline score.
  • Practice using the built-in Desmos graphing calculator, which is available for the entire math section.
  • Focus on accuracy in the first module, as it determines the difficulty (and maximum score potential) of the second module.
